The Canadian dollar is often called the 'loonie' due to the loon bird featured on the one-dollar coin introduced in 1987.
- Officially adopted in 1935, replacing the Canadian pound which had been used since Confederation in 1867
- The Bank of Canada was established in 1934 and began issuing banknotes in 1935
- Decimalized currency system with 100 cents per dollar, following the pattern of other North American currencies
- The Canadian dollar floated freely from 1970 onwards, allowing its value to fluctuate based on market conditions
