Became the currency of the independent Ceylon in 1948, retaining the rupee system
Renamed Sri Lankan Rupee in 1972 when Ceylon became the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
Managed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka since its establishment in 1950
