The Sri Lankan Rupee is one of the oldest continuously used currency names in Asia, having been in circulation for over 150 years.
- Introduced in 1872 during British colonial rule, replacing the rixdollar at a fixed rate
- Decimalized in 1869 with 100 cents equal to 1 rupee
- Became the currency of the independent Ceylon in 1948, retaining the rupee system
- Renamed Sri Lankan Rupee in 1972 when Ceylon became the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
- Managed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka since its establishment in 1950
