History
Amsterdam's flag was officially established in 1975, though the design is much older. The three crosses have been part of Amsterdam's heraldry since at least the 14th century.
Colors
Red, Black, Red
The colours are based on the coat of arms of Amsterdam: red field with a black pale (vertical stripe), representing the city's traditional heraldic identity.

The three crosses of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Burgundy) have represented Amsterdam since medieval times. They appear in the city's coat of arms and on many of its buildings.
