History
The black-white-red tricolour was the flag of the German Empire from its proclamation in 1871 until its dissolution at the end of World War I in 1918. It was later revived by the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany before being replaced by the current black-red-gold flag.

Black and white were the colours of Prussia; red and white were the colours of the Hanseatic cities and Brandenburg.
