The Real's name means 'Royal' in Portuguese, referencing Brazil's colonial past under Portuguese rule.
- Introduced on July 1, 1994, replacing the Cruzado Real during Brazil's economic stabilization plan
- Part of the Real Plan (Plano Real), which successfully controlled hyperinflation that had plagued Brazil in the early 1990s
- Initially pegged to the US Dollar, then allowed to float freely from 1999 onwards
- Became one of the most traded currencies in emerging markets by the 2000s
