The riel symbol ៛ is derived from Khmer script and remains one of the few currencies using a non-Latin character as its official symbol.
- Reintroduced in 1980 after the Khmer Rouge regime destroyed the previous monetary system
- Replaced the Cambodian franc which had been used during French colonial period and independence
- Experienced severe hyperinflation in the 1990s following the civil war and UN intervention
- Pegged to the US dollar in 1993, though the peg was later abandoned for a managed float
