The XAF is one of only two CFA francs still in use in Africa, with the other being the West African CFA franc (XOF).
- Established in 1945 as the currency of French Equatorial Africa following World War II
- Replaced the French Equatorial African franc when the monetary union was reorganized
- Pegged to the French franc at a fixed rate, later pegged to the euro since 2002
- Issued by the Bank of Central African States (BEAC), serving six member nations
- Maintains a currency board arrangement with guaranteed convertibility to euros
