- Introduced in 1995 following the Dayton Agreement that ended the Bosnian War
- Replaced the Bosnia and Herzegovina dinar at a fixed rate of 1 KM = 2 dinars
- Pegged to the German Deutsche Mark at 1.95583 KM per mark, later to the Euro at a fixed rate
- Name derives from the historical Bosnian currency unit used during Ottoman rule
