The Cuban peso is one of the few currencies still pegged to the US dollar despite decades of US embargo against Cuba.
- Introduced in 1857 during Spanish colonial rule, replacing the Spanish real as Cuba's official currency
- Remained in use after Cuban independence in 1902 with the establishment of the Cuban Republic
- Pegged to the US dollar from 1960 onwards due to economic ties and trade relationships
- Became the sole legal currency in 1993 after the Special Period economic crisis forced the legalization of US dollar circulation
