The Cuban peso is one of the few currencies still pegged to the US dollar despite decades of US embargo against Cuba.

Introduced in 1857 during Spanish colonial rule, replacing the Spanish real as Cuba's official currency
Remained in use after Cuban independence in 1902 with the establishment of the Cuban Republic
Pegged to the US dollar from 1960 onwards due to economic ties and trade relationships
Became the sole legal currency in 1993 after the Special Period economic crisis forced the legalization of US dollar circulation
