- Officially adopted in 1863, replacing the Mexican real as the standard currency
- The peso sign ($) derives from the Spanish peso de ocho (piece of eight), a colonial-era silver coin
- Experienced significant devaluation during the Mexican Revolution and subsequent economic crises
- Redenominated in 1993 when the new peso replaced the old peso at a 1:1000 ratio to combat inflation
- Currently managed by Banco de México, established in 1925
