The name 'Metical' derives from the Arabic word 'mitqal,' a historical unit of weight and currency used in medieval trade across the Indian Ocean.
- Introduced in 1980 following Mozambique's independence from Portugal in 1975
- Replaced the Mozambican Escudo at a rate of 1 Metical = 65 Escudos
- Redenominated in 2006 with new Metical (MZN) replacing old Metical (MZM) at 1:1000
- Managed by the Bank of Mozambique since its establishment
